Silver Kookaburra Specifications, Information & History

Australian bullion coins produced by the Perth Mint celebrate and honour key features of Australia and its lifestyle. In 1990 the Mint introduced the Silver Koookaburra series minted from 99.9% pure Silver. The Kookaburra is only minted in Silver although Perth Mint did issue a one-off Gold Proof Set to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Silver Kookaburra coin series.

Designs for the reverse of the Silver Kookaburra coin change annually (although initially the design on the large coin remained the same but now also changes annually), but the image always features the Kookaburra bird. For example the 1996 Silver Kookaburra coin features an image of a Kookaburra bird in flight whereas the 2006 Silver Kookaburra features a pair of Kookaburra birds sitting on a piece of tree branch. The reverse also carries the inscription "AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA", size, "999 SILVER" and mint year.

There are 4 coin sizes available from 1kg, 10oz, 2oz and 1oz. No fractional sizes are available yet. All coins feature the Ian Rank-Broadley image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side. Surrounding the image is the inscription "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the face value.
