Platinum Eagle Specifications, Information & History

Years of mintage/mint run: 1997 – present.

The Platinum Eagle is an official bullion coin of the United States and was introduced in 1997 by the US Mint adding to the existing successful Gold Eagle and Silver Eagle Coin Programmes. Between 1997-2008 four different weights and denominations were available for bullion and collectable proof coins and also for collectable and uncirculated Platinum Eagles between 2006-2008 (see technical specifications in the table below). However, from 2009 onwards the US Mint has only produced 1 Ounce Platinum Eagle coins. The coins are made from 0.9995 Platinum and, as with Gold and Silver Eagle coins, the purity is guaranteed by the United States Government.

The 1997 design for the Platinum Eagle features the head of the Statue of Liberty by US Mint designer John M Mercanti on the obverse side of the coin. The inscriptions on the obverse of the coin are “Liberty”, E Pluribus Unum” “In God we Trust” and the date. The reverse of the 1997 Platinum Eagle features a soaring Bald Eagle against a rising sun which was designed by Thomas D Rodgers Snr. The reverse inscriptions include “United States of America”, purity and the denomination. Proof Patinum Eagles also carry the West Point mint mark (W) for the West Point mint. Uncirculated collectable coins carry no mint mark and are produced at the US Mint in Philadelphia. Since 1998 to date the Platinum Eagle coins have featured different reverse deigns from various designers. For example, between 1998 – 2002 the US Mint issued a reverse design series known as “Vistas of Liberty” where the reverse of the Platinum Eagle included a different regional landscape design each year.
